New Hanover County Schools Expands Free Meal Site Locations and Adds Delivery Options to Meal Service Program

In response to the extended school closures mandated by NC Executive Order 117, New Hanover County Schools will be expanding their free meal service program.

Lunch and breakfast for the following day must be pre-ordered, either online, through the Meals Plus app, or by phone.  Phone orders can be placed by contacting the Child Nutrition Department at 910-254-2212. The meals are available to children 18 years of age and younger, and are provided under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Child Nutrition Department. Recipients should be prepared to drive or walk up to the designated meal pick-up area. There is no space available for eating on site. Parents and caregivers will be able to pick up meals for multiple families and volunteer organizations may continue to pick up meals for delivery.

On Monday, March 30, school meal service sites will increase from 14 to 20 schools. Additionally, the district will be providing bus delivery to 48 neighborhood sites throughout eligible areas of our community to increase accessibility. A list of bus delivery sites and times can be found here.

Community volunteer organizations can continue to make deliveries to neighborhoods and homes. The number of meals available for pick-up at one time will be limited to 20 in order to maintain USDA and Child Nutrition guidelines. NHCS will work with volunteer organizations to coordinate multiple pick-up locations as needed. Volunteer organizations must read Safe Food Handling Guidelines, and for each meal pick-up, provide an attestation form. Documents are available on the NHCS Child Nutrition Website.

The district is very appreciative of the many volunteers and organizations such as Latino Alliance, Nourish NC, and Community Conversations’ Operation Ring & Run that have been a great help in ensuring that our students remain fed during this time.

“On Wednesday, March 25, the district served over 5,500 meals, and over 1,500 of those meals were served by our volunteer organizations,” says Assistant Superintendent of Operations Eddie Anderson. “We will continue to work with all-volunteer organizations. By expanding this service next week, we hope to create a more sustainable program for the foreseeable future.”
